Project Description:
This program is the addition of City- owned street light systems along major arterial roadways. Currently, street lighting is provided through a lease agreement with KCP&L and covers only intersections and residential streets. Council approved funding in FY2004 to add streetlights to eight arterial streets. Street lighting will be included on other arterials as they are designed and constructed. The bond issue that was passed in the November 2007 election will expand this project to provide street lighting along nine additional arterial streets.
Project Rationale:
Lighting on arterial roadways is currently not part of the leased system. Safety is a concern for the driving public. Studies have shown that streets with continuous street lighting have a lower crash frequency at night than streets without lighting.
Status Details:
Installation is complete and systems operational for almost all of the eight Phase 1 street lighting projects. The only street segment that is yet to be lit is Ward Road from Persels Road to Oldham Parkway. Lighting will be constructed along this street segment when other improvement projects in the area are constructed. Design and construction activities have begun for several of the nine street lighting projects (Arterial Street Lighting Phase 2) funded by the November 2007 bond election. The Blackwell Road, Todd George Pkwy., and Langsford Road are complete. Construction is in progress on Colbern Road and on Woods Chapel Road. Design work is in progress for Longview Blvd. and Douglas Street. Persels Road and 2nd Street projects have not yet begun.
